Frequently Asked Questions

What does the counseling process look like?

Counseling is a collaborative process between you and your therapist.  It involves discussing the presenting issues that led you to seek help as well as pursuing the deeper, underlying factors that have contributed to the problem.

Counseling is normally conducted on a weekly basis for a 50-minute session. This time can often be emotional and psychologically challenging as we explore your story.  You may even feel worse before you start to see results, which is actually a sign that you are doing good work.  We believe past hurts that have not been resolved often interfere with our present functioning.  Author and psychologist Dan Allender says, “The past repeats itself through a ritual of reenactment because the person is unwilling to open his arms to the agony, shame, and loss of the past.  If we don’t open our arms and hearts to the past, we will remain suspicious and closed to the present.”

Do you offer counseling from a Christian perspective?

We serve clients of various backgrounds and are aware that everyone is at a different place in their journey.  We aim to respect each person’s values and their unique therapeutic goals. We hold Christian beliefs and we have been trained in a clinical model of counseling that integrates together psychology and theology. Our style of counseling is rooted in our faith and allow us to view all clients with compassion and dignity. For those who desire it, we are happy to integrate the importance of faith and religion into their counseling process.

How long does counseling last?

This depends on your particular situation.  After conducting a thorough assessment, your therapist can give you a better idea on the length needed to meet your counseling goals. Some people come weekly for as little as 3 months while others invest in the counseling process for over a year.  The average length of therapy is 6-9 months.

What are your office hours?

Our counselors offer convenient morning, afternoon, and evening appointments Monday through Friday (may consider Saturday appointments). To find out the availability of each therapist, call or email them directly (contacts found on team page) or use the contact page for any questions you might have. Counselors will do their best to contact you within 1 to 2 days. Please keep in mind that sensitive information should be shared in person.

How do I set up an appointment?

Making the initial call to seek help for you or a loved one is one of the most humbling, yet courageous steps you can take. Email either of us directly at Jaysoncurry15@gmail.com or Kristinacurry16@gmail.com , and we would love to take that step with you. Feel free to provide us with a phone number that we can contact you at if you would like.

Who can I contact when I am dealing with an emergency?

Your counselor can be contacted via email, however if you are in an emergency situation you should contact the Crisis Center of Birmingham. If you are experiencing an emergency or have an immediate need, please call our 24 hour hotline at 205-323-7777 or 1-800-273-8255.

How much does counseling cost?

The cost per 50-minute session varies between $135-$150 depending on the counselors licensure status and training. We also have counseling student interns who offer sessions for $30. This is comparative to the customary and usual average for the Birmingham area.  We believe it is important for you to invest in your healing in much the same way you invest in other areas of your life.

We accept cash, venmo, check (made payable to Restoring Hope Counseling Center), and all major credit cards.

Do you offer reduced fees for those in financial need?

We do not want finances to keep you from getting the help you need.  As a result, we may offer a fee reduction on a limited basis.  If you are interested in talking about what financial assistance might look like we can talk through that with you. Your counselor can help think through ways you can seek assistance to pay for counseling like asking your church or support system to invest in your healing process.

Do you accept insurance?

Jayson can submit insurance claims with members of Blue Cross/ Blue Shield.

We are not an in-network provider for any other insurance company, but we do provide a receipt that is compliant with all major insurance companies for reimbursement as an out-of-network provider.  You may call your insurance company to see if you are covered for out-of-network services.  Many of our clients have been able to seek reimbursement from their insurance company.
